What strikes me lately is that the world increasingly feels like we are living inside a massive game of Sid Meier’s Civilization. Humanity has advanced to the point where almost every major decision now carries exponential consequences. One breakthrough can move civilization forward for generations. One miscalculation can destabilize entire systems.
For the first time in history, humanity has nearly unlimited knowledge at its fingertips. Artificial intelligence, automation, biotechnology, and global connectivity have pushed us into territory no civilization has ever navigated before.
The problem is that technological advancement has accelerated faster than infrastructure, workforce development, and societal wisdom.
We assumed the infrastructure would simply appear because the technology existed. Companies optimized for efficiency, automation, and lean staffing. Entire generations were steered toward digital careers while skilled trades were treated as secondary paths rather than foundational professions.
I wrote a version of this argument a while back as a warning. It is no longer a warning. It is a description.
AI is not magic floating in the cloud. It exists inside physical infrastructure built and maintained by human beings. Data centers require enormous amounts of power, cooling, water, fiber, steel, concrete, and land. None of that exists without architects and engineers handing plans off to the HVACR mechanics, electricians, plumbers, controls technicians, welders, and operators who turn drawings into reality.
Without the built environment, nothing happens.
And the built environment is now the bottleneck. Last year, data centers drove half of all growth in U.S. electricity demand. Their share of the nation’s power is on track to roughly triple by 2028. In Virginia, they already pull more than one in four kilowatt-hours the state generates, and the utility there just filed for its first base-rate increase since 1992. The average American’s power bill climbed almost ten percent in a single year. The grid we spent decades treating as a settled fact is being renegotiated in real time, and ordinary ratepayers are picking up part of the tab.
Communities have noticed. In just the past year, more than a hundred localities have moved to restrict or pause data center construction, and bills to do the same have been filed in at least eleven states. Here in Washington, Seattle became the largest U.S. city to pause new large-scale AI data centers, and Spokane introduced a one-year moratorium of its own. Roughly $156 billion in projects has been blocked or delayed by local opposition. The pushback is not fringe. It is municipal, bipartisan, and accelerating.
Underneath all of it sits a workforce that does not exist in sufficient numbers. Electrical work alone accounts for between 45 and 70 percent of what it costs to build a data center, and Microsoft’s own president has called the electrician shortage the single biggest thing slowing that buildout. The math is brutal and simple: about ten thousand electricians leave the trade every year, and only about seven thousand replace them. By 2030, the country could be short more than two million skilled tradespeople, a gap one major report puts at a trillion dollars a year in lost output.
This is what imbalance looks like. We built the demand and forgot to build the hands.
Maybe this is my facilities soapbox talking, but civilization is still fundamentally physical. The more “digital” society becomes, the more dependent it becomes on invisible infrastructure most people never think about until it fails.
That is the dangerous stage of civilization, in games and in reality. Collapse rarely comes from a lack of intelligence. It comes from imbalance, when advancement outpaces infrastructure, workforce, and long-term thinking all at once.
There is a way through, and it is not complicated, only unglamorous. Stop treating the trades as a fallback. Fund the apprenticeships. Pay the wages the work is now worth. Build the power and water and people on the same timeline as the algorithms, instead of assuming they will catch up on their own. The same technologies straining the system could help us run it, but only if the physical world is staffed and standing.
Like late-stage Civilization, we are balancing science, production, resources, diplomacy, infrastructure, and sustainability all at once.
The difference is this is not a simulation.
There are no save files. No restarting the game. No lowering the difficulty.
Only humanity trying to determine whether our wisdom can catch up to our power before the next turn begins.
