Roots and Reverence: A Tribute to Our Elders
July 5, 2026Unconditional Love
By Nick Aitoro
If you had told me seven years ago that a human being could experience unconditional love, I would’ve said you were living in a fantasy. I believed the only true unconditional love came from God.
Then I met someone. I gave her everything, and she gave everything in return. Through her, I discovered the depth of unconditional love, and how profoundly it could shape a life.
And then, without warning, she left. No explanation, no goodbye, just gone, taking with her a piece of my heart shaped only for her.
As the first anniversary of her leaving approaches, I’ve come to a painful realization: my understanding of unconditional love was incomplete. Even through the heartbreak, the sadness, betrayal, loneliness, and the darkest moments I’ve ever faced, I still love her. I still hold empathy for her. I understand why. I’ve learned to separate her actions from the frightened little girl inside. She may never see this. But in time, if not already, she’ll remember what unconditional love feels like.
Sometimes I wonder if I’ll ever feel that again, for anyone besides my child. If that space in my heart will remain unfilled.
But I choose a different perspective. I choose to see this as proof that I am capable of real, unconditional love. And if I can love like that even through all I’ve endured, then that love still lives in me. It’s mine to give, to others, to the world, and to myself.
You Do Not Need to Do Anything to Be Loved
By Nick Aitoro
Love, when it is truly unconditional, is not confined to the divine. Human beings are capable of loving one another without transaction, without earning. We begin to love through understanding rather than judgment. We begin to love through acceptance rather than demand.
That is real love. It does not withdraw when imperfect humanity appears. It is not merely unconditional. It is unconditional love elevated by compassion and presence.
That is heavenly love, expressed in human form.
I Do… Love You
By Nick Aitoro
And so…
I do love you.
Not for what you have done.
Not for what you can do.
Not for what you might become.
I love you because I can meet you where you are.
Without demand.
Without condition.
Without expectation.
I love you through understanding.
I love you through acceptance.
I love you with compassion.
That is enough.
