They Were Italians When They Arrived

They were Italians when they arrived.

Not an idea. Not a label. Not a debate.
People.

They came from villages outside of Naples, places where families stayed for generations and leaving was never part of the plan. The land was familiar, the work was hard, and opportunity was limited. Their parents faced the same decision many Italian families faced at the turn of the century. Stay and endure, or leave and hope.

They chose hope.

Both Poppi and Nanny arrived at Ellis Island as children, brought by parents who wanted more for themselves and their families. They believed the promise of the American Dream was real. They did not arrive with open hands. They came to work honestly, to build, and to become Americans. They carried traditions passed down through generations, not to replace anything here, but to contribute to the country that took them in.

They crossed an ocean with almost nothing.
A single suitcase.
A few keepsakes.
Faith.
Addresses written by hand.
Recipes carried in memory because memory could not be taken from them.

What they owned came with them. What they loved stayed behind.

America tested them early.

Their names were reshaped, their accents noticed, and their traditions often misunderstood. They learned the country by watching it, listening to it, and working within it. English carried them through the outside world. Italian anchored them at home. Families lived tightly together and shared what they had, sending money back across the ocean to relatives who would never make the journey.

Poppi built a profession and became a pharmacist.
Nanny showed her determination early. She graduated ahead of schedule from School 18 in Yonkers and went on to Butler Business School. At sixteen years old, she graduated from Butler, becoming the youngest student to ever do so.

Then the Great Depression arrived.

As its weight pressed down on the country, Poppi died of pneumonia. Nanny was twenty five years old with an infant and a toddler, and no margin for failure. There was no safety net. No pause. Only the choice to keep going.

She never remarried. She relied on herself, her family, and the community around her. She worked, endured, and raised her children through the final years of the Depression without surrendering them to circumstance or despair. The same resilience that carried her parents across an ocean now carried her through the hardest years of her life.

She kept Italy alive in the ways that mattered.
Food meant love.
Traditions meant belonging.
Stories meant remembrance.

She spoke of her parents and the villages they left behind, but she did not live in the past. She built a future.

My Italian side is the only side of my family whose story I know anything about. It is the history that was preserved through stories, habits, and lived example, not written down, but remembered.

At ninety four years old, she left this world to be reunited with the love of her life, having completed the work she was given.

I am proud of Italian and Irish roots. They are where family comes from, not identity itself. I am a second generation Italian and Irish American, and fully American.

What matters most is not origin, but outcome.

My grandparents did not ask to be carried. They carried themselves. They worked, adapted, and contributed. They built a path that allowed the next generation to build its own.

They brought a piece of Italy with them, and through work, sacrifice, and perseverance, they became Americans.

Dreams are only stories until someone is willing to endure long enough to make them real.

They did that.

That is the wisdom beneath the canopy.
