What Love Remains
July 25, 2025Shoshin: The Beginner’s Mind
By Nick Aitoro
One of the most powerful mindsets I’ve come across is a concept from Zen Buddhism called Shoshin, meaning “beginner’s mind.”
It’s the idea of approaching situations with openness, curiosity, and a willingness to learn, regardless of how experienced you may be.
In the words of Zen teacher Shunryu Suzuki:
“In the beginner’s mind, there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s, there are few.”
True mastery, as Shoshin suggests, comes not from answers but from the courage to keep asking questions.
In leadership, this means listening deeply.
In innovation, it means questioning assumptions.
In life, it means embracing every moment as a chance to grow.
Whether you’re starting something new or revisiting the familiar, a beginner’s mind can unlock unexpected insights.
What’s something in your life or work that you’re choosing to see with fresh eyes this week?
